Soft Skills I Learned
the Hard Way
Lessons in Communication, Public Speaking,
Interviewing and Networking
Would You Rather?
Would you rather eat 100 crickets at once than give a weekly presentation?
Would you rather walk across your lawn on stilts or introduce and talk with two people who don’t know each other?
People would rather do almost anything other than speak in public, network, interview, or have to engage in conversation with people they don’t know. At least that’s what I’ve heard in my workshops. Some of my favorites:
“I’d rather push a boat uphill than lead a group discussion.”
“I’d rather walk across fire than talk for 20 minutes with a stranger.”
“I’d rather run three flights of stairs than to have to remember somebody’s name on the spot.”
People would rather stay in a crappy job than risk interviewing for a new one; would rather get sidelined on a team because they’re afraid to speak up; would rather stay small and invisible than take the reins on a project.
I’d rather you didn’t.
I’d rather you used my book to get better at communication, networking, interviewing and public speaking.
